Remediation of a Former Manufactured Gas Plant and Agrochemical Site
ProblemA former industrial site with a wide range of pollution sources was proposed for development. Seven site investigations had failed to comprehend the extent of the problems or the interactive aspects of the contaminants. Development needed to proceed but there was no clear picture of the issues relating to the site. SolutionStage 1 A detailed site investigation of soils and water was carried out using chemical analysis and the Remedios Biosensors. These sensors integrate pollution responses and enable the user to interpret hazard assessment- a key component in risk assessment. Stage 2 All contaminated soil was screened on site. Once again the Biosensor was the screening tool for on and near site analysis while the materials were sorted for off-site disposal or on site bioremediation. Stage 3 Biopiling is the treatment of contaminated soils using an enhanced bioremediation technique. Soil was prepared for this process and then managed All contaminated soil was screened on site. Once again the Biosensor was the screening tool for on and near site analysis while the materials were sorted for off-site disposal or on site bioremediation. Today Monitored and managed remediation has been responsive to the developers needs. Successful sign off of materials enabled a retail park to grow from an otherwise blighted site. ApproachBiosensors are living organisms and are designed to be responsive to environmental parameters- in this case general and specific pollutants. Large sample throughput, unambigious responses and a linkage to bioavailability make them key to hazard assessment. Return to Case Studies |
