Remediation of a Pesticide Storage Area for Residential Development

Problem

A former pesticide storage area had contaminated groundwater and soil as a result of decades of practice. A remedial actions was required before development could occur.

Solution

Stage 1 A detailed site investigation of soils and water was carried out using chemical analysis and the Remedios Biosensors. These sensors integrate pollution responses and enable the user to interpret hazard assessment- a key component in risk assessment.

Stage 2 Although some material was taken off site as it was hazardous and unsuitable for bioremediation; 90 percent of the material was suitable for on site treatment. A bioreactor was developed and approved by the regulator.

Stage 3 For three months after careful management and feeding the issues were resolved and the site was then assessed for environmental improvement.

Today Groundwater showed no trace of the key pollutants (herbicides) after the treatment and monitored natural attenuation allowing sale of the site with a clean bill of health. Integrated analysis and novel solutions brought value to this otherwise blighted site.
