Bioaugmentation and Biostimulation

Bioaugmentation is the addition of specifically selected pre-grown microorganisms to degrade contaminants. The enhancement of the microbial population present at a site subsequently improves contaminant clean up through ensuring the presence of sufficient quantities of microorganisms in the soil to complete biodegradation and additionally reduces clean up costs and time. Bioaugmentation is particularly effective where no indigenous microorganisms are identified in the soil that are capable of degrading the contaminant(s) in question. Biostimulation is the addition of nutrient amendments to soil and/or groundwater to stimulate indigenous microorganisms and consequently biodegradation.
