Phase II (Intrusive) Site Investigations

Phase II Site Investigations are intrusive which involves collecting and analysing soil, water and gas samples (as appropriate) from the site. These investigations are typically in order to determine if contaminants of concern are present in the ground, and if potential receptors (such as future land-users and the wider environment) are, or could potentially be, exposed to them.

Every site investigation designed by is site-specific. We will consider multiple aspects such as the clients and regulators requirements, land-use, area and access, geology, and the relevant standards/ guidance.

Common terms used include targeted (as opposed to non-targeted) specifically investigating a particular pollution source or pathway or area on the site. Exploratory, main and supplementary site investigations may be conducted depending upon the circumstances.

An exploratory investigation is often targeted, and will obtain only a limited amount of information, but usually allows the conceptual site model designed in the Phase I Site Investigation to be checked and refined. The information gained in the exploratory investigation may be adequate to conclude that no further investigation is required, or, that a main intrusive investigation is needed.

The main site investigation should involve the characterisation of the contamination sources, pathways and receptors on the entire site. Both of targeted and non-targeted approaches may be employed, but overall the main investigation should be less targeted than the exploratory investigation.

A supplementary site investigation is only needed if a deficiency of information has been identified in the main investigation. The further information gained may be used to confirm there is no significant harm to receptors, or, to design a cost-effective remedial strategy or statement.
